They say there are two kinds of movie watchers; those who love scary movies and those who avoid them at all costs. Horror is one of the most searched genres, be it gore, slasher, zombie, ghost, possession or creature feature. If you love being creeped out, then here is a collection of English horror movies that is sure to send chills down your spine.
1. The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005)
When a young girl Emily Rose dies, everyone blames the priest who performed the exorcism on her prior to her death. This movie is based on true events, which makes it all the more scary.
2. Sinister (2012)
Ethan Hawke plays a crime writer who moves into a house along with his family where a horrific crime had taken place earlier. He finds a box of “snuff” film footage in his attic that puts his family in danger.
3. The Others (2001)
A woman named Grace (Nicole Kidman) has been raising her two young children in a mansion on the Isle of Jersey. Her children have a disease; they are allergic to sunlight. When a new trio of servants arrives to replace the previous crew that inexplicably disappeared, unexpected and startling events begin to unfold.
4. The Taking of Deborah Logan (2014)
Deborah (Jill Larson), a nice elderly woman battling aggressive stages of Alzheimer’s disease, agrees to let a film crew document her medical condition. But as days progress, strange things begin to happen around her that are not consistent with Alzheimer’s. Soon it becomes evident that something sinister has taken control of Deborah’s life.
5. Dead Silence (2007)
Jamie Ashen (Ryan), a recent widower, returns to his hometown of Raven’s Fair to investigate the mysterious murder of his wife. He is accompanied by a ventriloquist doll that was left at his front door before his wife died. Jamie soon finds out that a dead lady ventriloquist named Mary Shaw (Judith) and her creepy dolls may have something to do with his wife’s brutal death.
6. The Woman in Black (2012)
Needing to pay the bills, Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe), a lawyer and widower with a young son, travels to a remote town to settle the estate of a recently deceased woman. What he doesn’t know is that the town is haunted by an evil, vengeful ghost of a woman dressed in black who seeks revenge by taking young children.
7. The Wicker Man (1973)
Sergeant Howie travels to the Scottish island village, Summerisle, to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. He discovers that the locals are weird, unhelpful, and claim the missing girl never existed. Determined to find the truth, Howie combs the community for any signs of the young girl but is met with lies and distortions. A true undisputed cult classic.
8. The Omen series (1976 -1991)
This series follows different stages of a boy believed to be the evil anti-Christ, aka, the Devil’s own son. Though there is not much gore in the movie, the background score, animals, coincidental events, etc., make it one of the scariest horror movies to watch.
9. Mama (2013)
Annabel and Lucas are faced with the challenge of raising his young nieces who were left alone in the forest without any social interaction for 5 years. The children, Victoria and Lilly, make cryptic references to an unseen “Mama”. Is Mama just an imaginary friend or someone more evil?
10. The Silence of the Lambs (1991)
Clarice Starling, a young FBI agent, is assigned to help find a missing woman to save her from a psychopathic serial killer. In an attempt to gain better insight into the twisted mind of the killer, she talks to another psychopath: Hannibal Lecter. Clarice must first gain Lecter’s confidence before he can give away any information that may help locate the serial killer.
11. The Insidious (2010)
This horror film is full of genuine scares, practical effects and an ending that’s just downright chilling. The Insidious follows a family looking to prevent evil spirits from trapping their comatose child in a realm called The Further.
12. The Shining (1980)
Jack Torrance, a normal writer and former teacher, signs a contract agreeing to take care of a hotel, which has a long history of violent past that puts everyone in the hotel in a nervous situation. While Jack slowly gets more violent and angry of his life, his son, Danny, tries to use a special talent, the “Shining”, to inform the people outside about whatever is going on in the hotel.
13. The Blair Witch Project (1999)
Three film students travel to Maryland to make a film about a local urban legend, The Blair Witch. Made on a shoestring budget, this movie proves that imagination can be as scary as anything onscreen. This film presents a raw look at what can happen when college students forego common sense and enter the world of voodoo and witchcraft.
14. The Conjuring (2013)
Strange things start to happen when Carolyn and Roger Perron move their family into a dilapidated Rhode Island farm house. As the nightmarish terror escalates, the Perrons reach out to paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren, to examine the house. The Warrens discover a whole area steeped in a satanic haunting that is now targeting the Perron family wherever they go. Another movie based on real life incidents that will haunt you long after you turn the lights back on.
15. Shutter (2008)
After arriving in Japan, the couple has a little mishap on the drive to their honeymoon cabin. After which Ben, a fashion photographer, begins noticing strange white blurs in many of his shoot photographs. Jane, his wife, believes that the blurs are actually ghostly images of the girl they hit on the road and that she may be seeking vengeance.
16. The Ring (2002)
Rachel Keller (Naomi Watts) is a journalist investigating an urban legend videotape that may have killed four teenagers (including her niece). This strange videotape kills the viewer seven days after watching it. The Ring is a remake of a Japanese cult movie with little gore and a lot of creepy visuals.
17. The Grudge (2004)
An American nurse living and working in Tokyo is exposed to a mysterious supernatural curse, one that locks a person in a powerful rage before claiming their life and spreading to another victim. Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) must find a way to break this spell before she becomes its next victim.
18. The Exorcist (1973)
A 12-year-old, Regan (Linda Blair), is possessed by a mysterious entity. What’s scary about The Exorcist is how demonic possession takes over an adolescent girl like a gruesome disease. The brilliant makeup, projectile-vomiting and blood, blasphemy and obscene language give the film even more credibility.
19. The Descent (2005)
A group of close female friends go on a spelunking trip and get trapped in a cave during their expedition. With only a handful of supplies to last them the rest of the trip, they are faced with another danger — strange bloodthirsty creatures whose love of the dark is as strong as their lust for blood.
20. 28 Days Later (2002)
No good deed goes unpunished. A group of animal rights activists break into a primate research facility and free the chimps, ignoring the warnings of the researcher who claims that they are infected. 28 days later, Jim (Cillian Murphy) wakes up from a coma in the deserted ICU of a hospital and wanders outside to find dead bodies piled in heaps. This is a tale of survival and ultimately, heroics, with nice subtext about mankind’s savage nature.
21. 1408 (2007)
A sceptical horror novelist, Mike Enslin (John Cusack), looking to debunk the mystery of paranormal occurrences, checks into the fabled evil room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel. He soon discovers that he may have received more than what he bargained for. Mike fears that he might never leave the room alive.
22. 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)
Michelle (Winstead) is involved in a car accident. When she regains consciousness, she finds herself sharing an underground bunker with Howard (Goodman) and Emmett (Gallagher). Has she been saved from an apocalyptical event as Howard claims or are there other motives for her being held against her will?
23. The Cabin in the Woods (2012)
Five college friends head off for a weekend at a remote cabin in the woods. They arrive to find that they are quite isolated with no means of communicating with the outside world. When the cellar door flings itself open, they decide to investigate and find an odd assortment of relics and trinkets. But when one of the women reads from a book, she awakens a family of deadly zombie killers. However, there’s far more going on than meets the eye.
24. Poltergeist (1982)
A young family is visited by ghosts in their home. At first, the ghosts appear friendly, moving objects around the house to the amusement of everyone, then they turn nasty and start to terrorise the family before they “kidnap” the youngest daughter.
25. Oculus (2013)
Kaylie (Karen) tries to exonerate her brother, who was convicted of murder, by proving that the crime was committed by a supernatural phenomenon – Lasser Glass, an antique mirror. She tracks down the mirror, only to learn that similar deaths have befallen previous owners. Kaylie wants to destroy the mirror with help from Tim. But will they succeed?
